At Burwell Dental Surgery we understand that many patients are nervous or phobic about visiting the dentist. Indeed, fear of the dentist is the main reason adults in the UK put off visiting a dental surgery, often waiting until an emergency occurs – which, ironically, can make the experience more traumatic.
Every member of staff at our dental practice is sympathetic to the needs of nervous patients. However, we do not believe that being nervous should be a barrier to getting the treatment you need and the smile you deserve. We will work with you to overcome your fear of the dentist.
We believe that, the key to helping nervous and phobic patients is to build a relationship of trust. Each and every member of our team has a caring and compassionate attitude, and we will spend time building a rapport with you, listening to and understanding your fears.
There are numerous causes of dental phobia and anxiety, from a bad past experience to specific triggers such as the sound of the drill or the sight of a needle. Some patients fear being out of control of the situation, while others who have not visited the dentist in many years worry about being judged and told off if their teeth are in poor condition. We are not here to judge you, we just want to help you get back to full oral health.
Good dentistry requires two-way communication between the dentist and the patient, so we will explain everything to you carefully and will be happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have.
Patients remain in control of treatment at all times. If you need a break, all you need to do is raise your hand and your dentist will stop. We make sure we build in plenty of time to appointments, so you should never worry that you are holding up the dentist – we understand that everybody needs to take a breather sometimes.
Don’t just take our word for it – we have many happy patients whom we have helped to overcome their fear of the dentist.
