braces-in-CambridgeWhether you have been contemplating braces treatment for many years, or it has been recommended by a professional, we will guide you through each step. We pride ourselves on our customer service and care. Right from your first contact, all the way to after care and follow up, we hope to give you superb dental treatment and care that will keep you coming back.

What will treatment involve?

You will attend for an initial consultation with a dentist, who will assess and advise you of the most suitable treatment. All this will take place at our clinic in Cambridge. Braces are not usually recommended in children under the age of 12. Most patients are suitable for treatment, but sometimes tooth extraction may be required first in order to allow enough room for the teeth once they have straightened. All this will be discussed and a treatment plan formulated.

There are two different kinds of braces that we are able to offer here, and depending on your individual circumstance and suitability, we will recommend the treatment which will have the most successful outcome. At Burwell Dental, Cambridge, braces are either fixed or removable. Removable braces have the added benefits that they can be easily cleaned and can be used at an earlier age.

We will discuss and advise of all treatment prior to commencing and will always ensure you are happy and comfortable. All treatment will take place here in Burwell, Cambridge; braces are first custom built by making a mould of your gums and teeth. Our orthodontist will then fit this to your teeth. We are able to offer various colours, as well as clear or ‘invisible’ wires, which are very desirable.

Treatment can take anything up to 18 months for a fixed brace. With removable braces treatment can take between six and nine months.

Straighter teeth for a brighter smile

Do you have crooked, crowded or gappy teeth? Struggling to keep them clean and feeling awkward about your smile? There’s no need to keep carrying this burden. At Burwell Dental in Cambridge, braces are on offer to straighten your teeth, restore your dental health, and bring a smile back to your face.

teeth-straighteningWhy are straighter teeth important?

Aside from the cosmetic improvements that straighter teeth can bring, your dental health is also improved. Crooked teeth mean more places for food to get stuck and bacteria to build up. Brushing is often not effective enough at getting into these difficult to reach nooks and crannies. This can ultimately increase your chances of tooth decay and gum disease. Gum disease in particular is known to have knock-on effects on your general health. Braces in Cambridge offer a way to avoid all of these unsavoury consequences for your dental health.

What kinds of braces are available?

At Burwell Dental we offer both fixed and removable braces in Cambridge. Removable braces are ideal for shifting the position of individual and small groups of teeth. Cleaning your braces is made easy as you can simply take them off. However for more extensive teeth straightening, fixed braces are the way to go. Metal brackets and wires are fitted around your teeth. These are adjusted every four to six weeks by one of our highly trained dentists. We will also provide you with guidance on how to keep both your braces and your teeth clean during your treatment. For fixed metal braces this is usually in the order of 12 to 18 months.

Aren’t braces just for kids?

Absolutely not. Achieving straighter teeth is a great idea whether you are a child or an adult. At Burwell Dental, we cater to both. Adults may be put off by the idea of wearing fixed metal braces, however there are now alternatives, including clear braces.

Straighter teeth can have a significant impact on your life. The confidence that comes with a more aesthetically pleasing smile can enhance your professional and personal relationships.

Get the best out of braces in Cambridge

Crooked and crowded teeth can leave you feeling self-conscious about your smile and make dental hygiene more of a challenge. At Burwell Dental in Cambridge, braces offer a reliable and effective solution to straighten your teeth. We cater to both children and adults, offering brighter smiles at any age.

braces-in-CambridgeWhen is the right time to get your teeth straightened?

The answer to this question depends on several factors, including: the number of adult teeth you have, how crooked they are, and the health of your teeth and gums. Conditions such as tooth decay and gum disease need to be treated first, as once your braces are fitted these issues could worsen. Fixed braces should only be used once all of your adult teeth have come through. In the meantime however, we offer removable braces.

Fixed versus removable

Removable braces can be taken off to make cleaning easy. They are usually used to shift an individual tooth or small groups of teeth. This treatment course takes six to nine months.

Fixed braces offer a more holistic treatment of your teeth. Metal brackets are glued to the fronts of your teeth and a wire is used to connect them. Every four to six weeks your fixed braces are adjusted to gradually move your teeth into place. Complete treatment can take up to 18 months.

Children often prefer to customise their fixed braces with different coloured bands around the brackets. For adults wanting a more subtle look, tooth-coloured braces are often preferred.

Keeping your braces clean is key to ensuring your dental health is maintained during your treatment. This can be especially tricky with fixed metal braces, however we are always here to help with advice on how to keep both your braces and teeth clean.

Straighten up with braces in Cambridge

Crooked teeth are a problem faced by both children and adults alike in Cambridge.Braces are used to straighten crooked teeth and whether you’re fourteen or forty can give you a renewed sense of confidence. At Burwell Dental in Cambridge, braces are on offer to help you achieve that winning smile.

braces-in-newmarketFixed or removable: the two kinds of braces explained

Fixed braces are the go to option when teeth are very crooked. They are individually fixed to each tooth and so cannot be removed by the patient.

Removable braces are used for straightening individual or groups of teeth and are ideal in younger patients whose adult teeth have not yet all come through. They are easy to clean and often used before moving on to fixed braces.

When is the right time to get braces?

There are two main factors we consider before fitting braces.

Firstly, the number of adult teeth you have. Fixed braces are fitted once all the adult teeth have come through. Removable braces can be used in the meantime.

Secondly, the condition your teeth and gums are in. Any tooth decay or gum disease needs to be taken care of before braces are fitted to avoid these conditions worsening when the braces are worn.

When the time comes to fit the braces, patients may experience some discomfort during the fitting and for a few days after. However the experience is not painful.

How long will I need to wear braces for?

This depends on how crooked the teeth are to start with, what kind of brace is used, and how well the brace is taken care of. It is important to keep the braces clean and in good condition. At Burwell Dental we provide our patients with all the information and advice needed to do this.

Treatments last anywhere from six to eighteen months with visits every four to six weeks to monitor your progress and help you achieve your goal of straightened teeth.

Yellow or grey teeth? You need cosmetic dentistry

The adult population is embracing the range of treatments that cosmetic dentistry in Cambridge offers. At Burwell Dental Surgery, we are particularly proud of the treatments we can offer and passionate about the positive results they have on our patients. A key concern of patients interested in cosmetic dentistry in Cambridge is discolouration of their teeth.

cosmetic-dentistry-newmarketSo why do teeth become discoloured?

There are a variety of reasons – some avoidable and some not. They fall into three categories – extrinsic, intrinsic and age-related. We’ll look at each type.

Extrinsic discolouration is damage to the enamel on the outer layer of the tooth. Nowadays, drinking coffee and red wine is often to blame for changes in colour. There are also some foods that can stain teeth. Patients who smoke are also more prone to problems with discolouration.

Intrinsic stains occur when the dentine, which is the inner structure of the tooth, becomes darker or yellower. There are several causes for this.

  • Excessive exposure to fluoride during early childhood
  • If a patient’s mother used tetracycline antibiotic during months 5-9 of the pregnancy
  • If the patient themselves used tetracycline antibiotics before the age of 8
  • Trauma affecting a developing tooth during childhood, such as a fall
  • Trauma to a permanent tooth or internal bleeding
  • Dentinogenesis imperfecta, a condition that some people are born with. It causes purple, amber or grey discolourations.

The final type is age-related. Mostly unavoidable, it is a blend of extrinsic and intrinsic staining. It is natural for dentine to yellow over time. In addition, as we age, the enamel on our teeth becomes thinner and this reveals the yellowing dentine behind. It is also possible for damage to teeth such as a chip can lead to discolouration.

So what can be done? Well, most extrinsic staining can be removed with professional cleaning, or whitened by using a bleaching gel. Some patients’ teeth are darker following a root canal. In this can the dentist can bleach the inside of the tooth or recommend the patient considers having a crown or veneer fitted. Veneers are basically thin layers of ceramic the cover the outside of the teeth.

All these treatments and more are available if you look for cosmetic dentistry in Cambridge. Don’t let discolouration ruin your smile.

Straighten things out

If you are one of the people in the UK that have less than straight teeth, you may have always wondered how a straight smile would look on your face. You may have crooked or misaligned teeth, large gaps, twisted or protruded teeth. Perhaps you an overbite, underbite or a crossbite. Teeth that do not fit together correctly are harder to keep clean and are at risk of being lost early because of tooth decay or disease. It is now easier than you think to straighten out that smile, with braces in Cambridge at Burwell Dental.

straighten-teethOur dentists will diagnose, treat and prevent irregularities of the teeth with the use of braces. Braces are fixed or removable dental appliances. These devices can be used to straighten teeth, correct an irregular bite, close unsightly gaps and bring teeth into proper alignment.

What are my choices?

In general, we have two options available: fixed or removable braces.

Fixed braces: This type of brace is fixed to the teeth with a special glue and therefore cannot be removed by the patient. Fixed braces are the best options for more severe cases of misalignment. They can be customised for children (e.g. their favourite colours), and adults may want to choose clear, near-invisible options.

Removable braces: This type of brace is best used with individual or small groups of teeth, and can precede fixed brace treatment. They are convenient and easily cleaned. Removable braces can be used at an earlier age than fixed braces.

Could braces in Cambridge change the shape of your smile?

Braces is an interesting word for a very clever concept that has evolved over hundreds of years and will no doubt continue to evolve for hundreds of years to come. In dentistry it originates from the name of the first devices used by dentists to straighten teeth, devices which would form a more literal “brace” in the mouth and push the teeth outwards and back into a straighter position in the mouth. Modern braces are much less intrusive than their original namesakes, and can take a variety of forms, many of which we offer at Burwell dental surgery in Cambridge. Braces and treatments that involve the use of dental braces are also sometimes referred to as orthodontics, or orthodontic braces.

braces-in-NewmarketBurwell Dental Surgery, Cambridge. Braces – what are the options?

At Burwell Dental Surgery, we give our patients the option of both fixed and removable braces, there are advantages to both types of braces.

Fixed braces (traditional wire braces) have the advantage of sometimes being the quicker option. In these cases wearing the more obvious wire type of braces may be desirable in order to facilitate a faster result. Fixed braces can also come with tooth coloured brackets, which make the braces a bit more discreet. Alternatively colours can be used on the braces for a fun effect. This is more preferable for some children, but adults can use colours as well.

Removable braces are sometimes preferred by adults and also have a more effective application for issues which involve bite correction, i.e. widening or narrowing the bite or jaw. These braces also have the advantage of being taken out, which makes eating and cleaning much easier.

Usually braces are offered to children and teenagers, however there is a popular trend amongst adults towards orthodontic treatments for crooked or misaligned teeth. Teeth straightening is not necessarily the only part of the orthodontic process. In some cases our orthodontist may refer a patient back to the dentist to remove one or more of their teeth if the reason for orthodontic treatment is crowding of the mouth or multiple teeth occurring where only one should have erupted in the mouth.

Cambridge invisible braces – straight teeth are healthy teeth

Did you know that straight teeth are healthier than crooked teeth?

While many people worry about how their uneven teeth look, some people avoid treatment because they feel that having their crooked teeth straightened would be a vain thing to do. In fact, having your teeth straightened doesn’t just make them look good. The most important aspect is the health of your teeth and delaying treatment to correct uneven teeth can lead to unnecessary decay.

At Burwell Dental Surgery in Cambridge we are well aware that for many people who are unhappy with their uneven teeth, just the thought of having to wear the traditional unsightly metal braces stops them from seeking help. Adults are especially uncomfortable with this idea and many people suffer embarrassment and even discomfort instead.

invisible-bracesThankfully, advances in orthodontics means that it is possible to straighten teeth without feeling self-conscious or embarrassed. Invisible orthodontics is a treatment that gives patients the opportunity to wear a clear appliance that straightens and aligns teeth. Some of these are removable too.We have a team who are experienced in assessing and fitting these invisible braces in Cambridge. We focus on keeping our patients informed and relaxed to ensure they have a positive experience and get the best results for their condition.

What makes invisible braces so good?

The invisibility is not the only advantage of this approach to teeth straightening. Some appliances can be removed from time to time to fit in with people’s hectic lifestyles without having a detrimental effect on the treatment.Invisible orthodontics could also straighten teeth faster than traditional braces. In fact for some patients in Cambridge with invisible braces, it takes as little as 6 months to reposition their teeth. Furthermore, our patients find them far more comfortable to wear than the traditional braces. This is largely down to the modern wire technology that is used in the invisible appliances. The modern wire requires less force to be effective reducing pressure within the patient’s mouth.

Good oral health is just as important as keeping the rest of the body healthy. Patients with invisible braces in Cambridge appreciate these appliances are a valuable long-term investment. Meanwhile the immediate advantage is the confidence boost that patients get when they know they have a beautiful smile.
